The Lutheran High Mustangs were knocked off in district match up with the Sacred Heart Saints of Hallettsville in the district home opener for the Mustangs. The Mustangs made a late comeback but it was too little, too late as the Mustangs fell 15-5.
The Saints got on the board with a 5 run first inning. The Mustangs got the first two runners on in their half of the first but were unable to push anything across.
Starting Pitcher Collin Hunick would settle down and get into a groove as the Saints were held without a run for the next two innings. Lutheran would push across a run in the third after Hunick stole third and the throw sailed into the outfield.
The Saints would add to their lead as they would answer with 7 runs in the top of the fourth.
That seemed to wake up the Mustang offense as they would answer with a four run fifth. Chris Alvarado and Zach Moore each had run scoring singles and Will Wren and Luke Watson each added RBIs as well in the inning.
Sacred Heart would tag on three more in the sixth to end the game 15-5.
Phillip Williams pitched two innings of relief allowing three runs on only one hit. He fanned three. Hunick took the loss after allowing 8 runs (6 earned) in three plus innings of work striking out three. Bryce Connolly pitched an inning of relief.
Offensively, Hunick reached base three times, stealing four bases and scoring two runs. Connolly added a double, going 1-3 on the day. Sam Schimke walked and singled to help the Mustang cause.
Lutheran (1-1, 1-1) will travel to Victoria to take on Faith Academy in another district contest. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 Friday.
