The Lutheran High Mustangs rebounded from their first defeat of the year to take out the Faith Academy Cougars in 2A-5 District action on Friday night. The Mustangs used strong pitching and an efficient offense to record the 7-3 win.
The Mustangs got on the board right away with an RBI single by Luke Watson. Bryce Connolly drove in Watson to make it a 2-0 game.
After a lead off double in the third by Connolly, Will Wren followed by lacing a run scoring single to make it 3-0.
Connolly was dominant on the mound, only running into a little trouble in the third inning. Faith would add two runs after a passed ball and wild pitch after a double left runners on second and third.
Lutheran would answer right back with two runs of their own. Dale Allison led off with a walk and Sam Schimke found his way on base. Phillip Williams came through with a big one out, 2 run single to make it 5-2. The Mustangs would cruise the rest of the way.
Lutheran would tack on two more in the 7th, after Wren’s triple scored Connolly.
Watson would pitch the last two innings for the six out save and the Mustangs would win 7-3.
Connolly picked up the win after pitching 5 innings, scattering 4 hits, while striking out 8 and walking 2. Watson picked up his first save, pitching 2 innings, allowing no runs, no hits and striking out 1.
Offensively Wren continues to drive in runs for the Mustangs. He went 2-4, with a double, 2 runs scored, and added 2 more RBIs to his team leading 7. Connolly went 1-2, with a double, 2 walks, and 2 runs scored. Watson and Williams each went 1-4 combining for 3 RBIs.
The Mustangs (2-1, 2-1) will host New Braunfels Christian Academy on Monday at the Missions Sports Complex in another district contest before playing FEAST on Tuesday in a non district game.
