The Lutheran Mustang Baseball team had the top team in the district on the ropes but fell 180 feet short of a comeback bid. The Mustangs had the tying run on second base in the top of the 7th, but a pick off ended the rally and the game. New Braunfels Christian Academy escaped with the 5-4 victory.
The Mustangs took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single from Luke Watson to plate Collin Hunick.
NBCA would score three runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead, with all runs coming with two outs.
An RBI single by Connolly scored Watson in the 5th to cut it 3-2. The Wolverines would answer with two more runs in the bottom of the inning.
Lutheran was not done, however. Another RBI by both Watson and Connolly made it 5-4 in the 6th, but the Mustangs left the bases loaded and weren’t able to push the tying run across.
The Mustangs got a superb pitching effort from sophomore Bryce Connolly. Connolly pitched 5 innings, giving up 5 runs (3 earned) while striking out 13 Wolverines. Luke Watson pitched an inning, striking out 2.
Hunick, Watson, and Connolly each had two hits for the Mustangs as they outhit NBCA 11-6. Eight of the starters recorded a hit for the Mustangs.
Lutheran fell to 2-5 in the district, while NBCA improved to 5-1 in district play.
The Mustangs will host Winston on Tuesday, April 28th at 4:30 PM at Missions Baseball Academy. The Mustangs defeated Winston 14-2 earlier in the year.
