Selma,TX-The Lutheran High Mustang football team didn’t need any of the fourth quarter theatrics in their most recent game, as the Mustangs got the lead early and never looked back as they defeated the River City Believers Academy Solders 47-8 in six man football action on Friday. The Mustangs scored 34 points in the third quarter to break the game open to stay perfect on the year.
Sophomore Zack Gentry opened the scoring for Lutheran as he scampered 36 yards for a touchdown to give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead. Later in the first quarter, senior Chris Coronado capped a 9 play drive with a 1 yard touchdown plunge to extend the lead to 13-0.
The Soldiers would fight back as they were able to connect on a two long pass plays and Matthew Willemin found Robert Shuey in the back of the endzone for a 28 yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 13-8. That score would hold till halftime.
The Mustangs used halftime to fuel up and came out smoking in the third quarter. Collin Hunick raced down the sidelines for a 43 yard touchdown run to open the floodgates in a big third quarter. Just a few minutes later, Hunick again beat the defense, this time scoring from 50 yards out.
Chris Coronado added his second score of the game as he took it 33 yards for the touchdown. Two plays later, Zack Gentry intercepted a Soldier pass and took it 36 yards the other way for another Mustang touchdown to give the Mustangs a comfortable 40-8 lead.
Finally, Gentry would add his third touchdown of the game with a 7 yard touchdown run to make it 47-8.
The Soldiers tried to get a score late but a last second pass was intercepted in the endzone by freshman Reece Alfaro in the endzone.
The Mustangs held the Soldiers to just 141 yards of total offense on the night and forced 4 turnovers. Lutheran racked up 341 yards of total offense.
Lutheran was led by Hunick who tallied 190 yards rushing on 13 carries and scored 2 touchdowns. Coranado added 52 yards of rushing with a pair of touchdowns, while Gentry gained 40 yards on the ground to go with 2 rushing touchdowns.
Gentry also led the Mustangs defensively as he had a team high 7.5 tackles (5 solo, 5 assist) to go with 1.5 tackles for loss and an interception return for a touchdown. Coronado also added 4 total tackles (3 solo, 2 assist) and a tackle for loss. Hunick also added 4 tackles. Josh Escamilla chipped in with 2.5 tackles and a fumble return.
Lutheran (2-0) will travel to Dallas to take on Dallas Lutheran on September 12th. Kickoff is set for 11 AM at the campus of Dallas Lutheran.
