Multiple Teams · BBB:Mustangs Downed in 105-100 Shootout at The Barn

San Antonio, TX-If you were outside on Tuesday night and happened to smell burning nylon, chances are it was coming from the The Barn at Lutheran High School. In the second round of the TAPPS 2A Boys Basketball Playoff, Lutheran High and Alpha Omega scorched the nets with an offensive display that saw the teams combine for 205 points in a non overtime contest. Alpha Omega pulled out the 105-100 victory to advance to the Regional Round of the playoffs.

The Mustangs jumped out early in a high scoring first quarter. Corey Friesenhahn and Luke Watson combined to score 11 points and lift the Mustangs to a 29-23 first quarter lead.


The Mustangs would catch fire from beyond the arc in the beginning of the second quarter connecting on five three pointers. Sophomore Sam Schimke had three of his own and the Mustang lead would grow to as much as nine, taking a 48-39 lead. The Lions would respond with a 14-0 run and take a 57-53 lead into halftime.

The Mustangs hung tough though as five straight points by Junior Collin Hunick trimmed the lead to 66-65 in favor the Lions. However, Alpha Omega would go a 14-4 run to take a 83-69 lead into the fourth quarter.

Williams with two of high team high 26 points.

Lutheran would fight back outscoring the Lions in the fourth quarter behind a strong performance by Junior Phillip Williams. Williams scored 16 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter while his post mate Daniel Hernandez added 5 more as the Mustangs tried to comeback by going inside.

In the end though, the Mustangs had no answer defensively for Cam Smith and Cade Ernst. Smith scored a game high 53 points, shooting 29-35 from free throw line. Ernst ended the night with 30 points, nailing 8 three pointers. The duo combining for 83 of the team’s 105 points.

For Lutheran High, they were led by Williams’ 26 points. Hunick added 21 points. Friesenhahn had 13 points while Schimke added 12 points. Luke Watson chipped in with 9 points and Daniel Hernandez tallied 7 points.

Two Mustangs played in their final game. Seniors Luke Watson and Chris Alvarado suited up in the garnet and gray for the last time. The two seniors helped the team win 46 games the past two years, earning a berth to the Final Four in 2015 and a District Championship in 2016.

Lutheran High finishes with a record of 28-9 while Alpha Omega (23-8) will move on to play St. Paul (Shiner) in the Regional Round of the TAPPS 2A Playoffs.
