The Lutheran High Mustang Baseball Team had quite the wild ending to the district season. After already clinching a playoff spot, the Mustangs hoped to move up in seeding. All they had to do was win their final two district contests, not an easy task as those included the District Champion Sacred Heart and third place St. Paul.
The Mustangs were up to the challenge on Friday night as they went toe to toe with St. Paul (Shiner). The Mustangs got on the board in the first inning as Dawson Dullnig scored from second base on a ground out to the second baseman. He scampered all the way home to beat the throw from the first baseman. The score would remain 1-0 till the 4th inning.
With runners on first and second, Luke Terry hit a ball to the shortstop. The throw to the second baseman ended up in right field allowing Zach Gentry to score and leave runners on first and third. Dullnig would score his second run of the game on an overthrow from the catcher to the pitcher and Lutheran would take a 3-0 lead.
That would be all that freshman starting pitcher Jerad Sherer would need as he just allowed an RBI single in the 6th inning en route to a complete game. Sherer used a good Mustang defense behind him while shutting down St. Paul. He finished with 5 strikeouts while allowing 1 run and scattering 6 hits while pitching 7 innings.
On Monday, Lutheran hosted Sacred Heart (Halletsville). A win would tie the Mustangs with St. Paul for third place in the district. The Mustangs got out to an early head. Dullnig led off the first inning with a single. He would later come around to score to give Lutheran a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Sherer smacked a two out RBI single that scored Luke Watson to push the lead to 2-0.
Sacred Heart would catch fire on offense. Over the next three innings they would scratch out 11 singles to score 9 unanswered runs off three Mustang pitchers. Sacred Heart would win 9-2 to cap an undefeated district season and finish 10-0 on the year.
For Lutheran, Luke Terry helped the Mustang offense with a double. Watson, Dullnig, Sherer, and Elijah Biedinger all had for the Mustangs.
Lutheran finishes the regular season with a 9-12 overall record and a 5-5 record in district play. They will travel to Tomball, Texas to play Rosehill Christian in the first round of the TAPPS 2A Baseball Playoffs. First pitch is slated for 5 PM. Rosehill Christian was the second place finisher in District 5.
