Multiple Teams · Boys BB: Battle Tested Mustangs Ready for District Season


For most teams, finishing with a 16-8 record would be a nice ending. For the Lutheran High School boys basketball, it’s a good start. The Mustangs kick off district play tonight after compiling a 16-8 record in the non district season. Lutheran will travel to Castle Hills to take on Christian Academy of Castle Hills in the TAPPS 3 A District 5 opener.

The Mustangs are riding a big wave of momentum having won 14 of the past 17 games, which included an 11 game winning streak. Lutheran has taken on all challenges as they have played a schedule with a mix of public school and private school teams. The Mustangs won the Johnson City High School Tournament and the CASA Tournament, while taking 3rd place in the Randolph Tournament and the Lutheran High Tournament.

The Mustangs are averaging 69.2 points per contest and are led by a of senior returning All Staters – Collin Hunick and Corey Friesenhahn. Hunick is leading the team with 14.1 points per game, while Friesenhahn is averaging 9.5. Junior Zack Gentry is averaging 8.5 while Keith Dukes averages 7.1.

Lutheran High is ranked #6 in the latest TAPPS 3A Coaches Rankings while they are ranked #4 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 3A Rankings.

Lutheran High will be on the road for their first three district games of the season. THey will play at Christian Academy, followed by a trip to St. Gerard on Friday, January 13th, and again at Kerrville Our Lady of the Hills on January 17th. All games have a 7:30 tip.

The Mustangs will open at home on January 20th against Keystone.
