Buzzer beaters are typically uncommon in soccer. Those are saved for March Madness brackets. Tuesday’s match against Universal City First Baptist had all the drama of a March basketball game–playoff implications, late heroics, and heart racing action.
Dylan Usher scored the equalizing goal with under 15 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. After two scoreless overtime periods, the match again went to penalty kicks, where a pair of seniors stepped up.
Senior Douglas Young saved all three UCFB attempts and scored a goal himself, while fellow senior, Keith Dukes banged home the clincher to give the Mustangs a 3-0 win in the shootout. Junior Ethan Maller scored the first goal in the shootout.
Maller added to his scoring tally, notching a pair of goals in the first period giving LHS a 2-1 at the half. UCFB added two goals in the second half and were on their way to victory before Usher’s heroics.
The win clinched a playoff spot for LHS, earning the number three seed in the district. Lutheran improved to 7-4 on the season while UCFB fell to 5-7.
